Poem | Wake Up With Me

(Inspired by the song 'wake up with me' by Gabrielle Aplin)

We have slept for too long my love.
I’ve been lying in your arms through it all,
Doors locked, blinds drawn, ignoring all other than you.
Staying in a state of perpetual naivety,
in our dream of love and anniversary gifts and the future.
However now our eyes flickers and twitch.

Wake up with me.

The demons with hard eyes, stone eyes,
and the sadistic rulers of past and present are waiting at the foot of our bed,
but open your eyes and I’ll do the same.
We can fight and escape,
Rid of the nightmares and try to drag our dreams back out of this room we lock ourselves in.

Wake up with me and see the soft light,
Rather than the fluorescent flashes that blinded us before.
Breathe calm and slow,
Do not heave,
Do not gasp like we did as we ran from opposition.

Wake up with me and keep me in your arms as we walk towards it all.
Feel me on your skin like the clean morning air.
Love me like you did in our seven month sleep and keep me in your heart as we awake.
